Praying to Make a Difference
1 Kings 18:36-37 (Elijah on Mount Carmel)
“And it came to pass, at the time of the offering
of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet
came near and said, ‘LORD God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day
that You are God in Israel, and that I am Your servant,
and that I have done all these things at Your word.
Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people
may know that You are the LORD God,
and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.’ “
“So it was, when I heard these words,
that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days;
I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
And I said: ‘I pray, LORD God of heaven,
O great and awesome God, You who keep Your
covenant and mercy with those who love You
and observe Your commandments,
please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open,
that You may hear the prayer of Your servant
which I pray before You now, day and night,
for the children of Israel Your servants,
and confess the sins of the children of Israel
which we have sinned against You.
Both my father’s house and I have sinned.’ ”
“Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make
request by prayer and supplications,
with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.
And I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession,
and said, ‘O Lord, great and awesome God,
who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him,
and with those who keep His commandments,
We have sinned and committed iniquity, we have
done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing
from Your precepts and Your judgments.
Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets,
who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes,
to our fathers and all the people of the land.
O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face,
as it is this day --- to the men of Judah, to the
inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near
and those far off in all the countries to which You
have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness
which they have committed against You.’ “
2 Chronicles 7:12-14
(The LORD God speaking to Solomon after
dedication of the first temple in Jerusalem.)
“Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night
and said to him: ‘I have heard your prayer,
and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.
When I shut up heaven and there is no rain,
or command the locusts to devour the land,
or send pestilence among My people,
If My people who are called by My name will
humble themselves, and pray and seek My face,
and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear
from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.’ “
Uganda moved from the infamous and ruthless dictator,
Idi Amin, in the 1970’s to a nation embracing
the Lordship of Jesus Christ on New Year’s Eve 1999,
under President Museveni.
How? God’s response to prayer.
“Forgiveness and reconciliation are the answer to a nation’s woes.”
- President Museveni of Uganda, early 1990’s
South Africa had a government-appointed Commission on
Truth and Reconciliation under President Nelson Mandela,
What do we need for “Praying to Make a Difference"
1. Unselfish Praying
2. Rejecting the Status Quo of Injustice
Example: Great Britain’s William Wilberforce
who worked to end slavery in the British Empire.
3. Prayer and Relationships
Examples: Nehemiah and the Persian King,
Artaxerxes, to whom he was cupbearer.
Joseph and the Pharaoh of Egypt (Genesis 41).
Paul and the Philippian Church (Phil. 4:10-19).
4. Three Essentials
c. Faith Expectation
